This is an introductory course for students ages 14+ who have little to no prior experience or formal study with Vietnamese.

About the Course

 

Student Profile

Students ages 14+, who have 

  • No prior experience or formal study speaking, reading, writing, or listening to Vietnamese OR

  • Some experience with the language but have not been formally taught and still need to build a strong foundation in Vietnamese 

What Students Learn

  • Vietnamese alphabet and tones

  • Pronunciation patterns and how to pronounce words

  • Everyday phrases and vocabulary

    • Dining out

    • Greeting family members

    • Describing yourself

    • Directions and places

  • Vietnamese customs

Class Schedule

Weeks 1-2: Introductions; alphabet, tones, greetings

Weeks 3-12: Sentence structure, ethnicities, locations, time, occupations, and more

Each subsequent class briefly reviews the preceding class

Additional Details

Assessments will take the form of homework, quizzes and in-class participation.

Class materials include the textbookTiếng Việt cho Người Nước Ngoài - Volume 1 (Vietnamese as a Second Language), which is provided for students. Students are expected to use their own writing supplies, including paper, pencils, erasers, etc. 

SPELLING & PRONUNCIATION CLASSES 

S&P classes will take place in the first 2 weeks of class. Attendance is mandatory.
